When it comes to your health and getting all of the care you need—it's important to cover all of your bases. How It Works
Medicare Advantage Plans, also know as Part C or MA Plans, are an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare. When you sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan, you retain your Medicare coverage— Medicare pays a fixed amount for your care each month to the private insurance company offering the plan. Companies offering the plans must follow rules set by Medicare. These "bundled" plans include Medicare Part A (Hospital) and Part B (Medical), and usually Medicare prescription drug (Part D). Each MA plan can charge different out-of-pocket costs and have different rules for how you get services, like whether you need a referral to see a specialist. So, it's important to pick the right plan for your needs.
What It Covers
Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer coverage for things that aren't covered by Original Medicare, like vision, hearing, dental, and wellness programs (like gym memberships). Some MA Plans cover more than they have in the past, including extra benefits for services like transportation to doctor visits, over-the-counter drugs, adult day-care services, and other health-related services that promote your health and wellness. Plans can also tailor their benefit packages to offer these new benefits to certain chronically ill enrollees. These packages will provide benefits customized to treat those conditions. Check with the plan to see what benefits are offered and if you qualify. Most plans include Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D).
Important Questions
Ask these questions when looking for a Medicare Advantage plan. Contact the plan directly if you don't find answers in the company's publications or on their website. What's my share of the costs for services & supplies?
Plans are provided by private insurance companies so co-payments, co-insurance and deductibles can vary from plan to plan.
Does the plan have a network of providers for some or all services?
You can still see providers who aren't part of the plan's network if they accept the plan's payment terms. But, you may pay more for out-of-network services..
Does the plan offer vision, hearing, dental, or prescription drug coverage?
Under some plans, yes! These are not benefits Original Medicare offers, so you may pay more for the extra coverage. If the plan doesn't offer drug coverage, you can join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D).
Medicare Advantage Plans cover all Medicare services. Some MA Plans also offer extra coverage, like vision, hearing, and dental coverage. Learn more about what MA Plans cover.
RULES FOR MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLANS
Medicare pays a fixed amount for your care each month to the companies offering Medicare Advantage Plans. These companies must follow rules set by Medicare. Each MA Plan can charge different out-of-pocket costs. MA Plans can also have different rules for how you get services, like whether you need a referral to see a specialist or if you have to go to doctors, facilities, or suppliers that belong to the plan for non-emergency or non-urgent care. These rules can change each year.
COSTS FOR MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLANS
What you pay in a MA Plan depends on several factors. You can learn about these factors by inquiring with your plan provider to make sure you understand the coverage and the costs.
DRUG COVERAGE IN MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLANS
Most MA Plans include prescription drug coverage (Part D). You can join a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan with certain types of plans that:
• Can’t offer drug coverage (like Medicare Medical Savings Account plans)
• Choose not to offer drug coverage (like some Fee-for-Service plans)
You’ll be disenrolled from your Medicare Advantage Plan and returned to Original Medicare if both of these apply:
• You’re in a Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO
• You join a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan
